The Attached Release

Faith past the last charted line

Widow He did not permit dawn confusion in her matshed.

Widow He did not permit dawn confusion in her matshed.

By first light she had already rolled the spare mats, set Huan and Tao against opposite posts so they would stop looking at the water as if it might pity them, and sent a fish runner to South Gate with the only sensible summary:

Two bodies hold under one source. Write faster than the tide.

South Gate did.

The page they built that morning had to solve three problems at once.

It had to keep Huan and Tao legally paired at origin. It had to let them divide honestly by tide. And it had to do both without teaching the public board a softness broad enough to be mistaken for family policy.

Xu drafted first and failed. His line looked too complete. Sun cut it down. Gao cut it harder. Marta cut every word that sounded as if the city had discovered tenderness.

What remained in the closed book was:

attached source — two bodies under one originating witness split by class and water relation retained in closed page only

For Tao:

branch boy release from attached source lower matshed witness pending branch window White Heron if received

For Huan:

mesh hand from attached source lower matshed witness pending first useful cove Reed Bank if received

No one liked attached source, which was one reason it might survive.

The public problem remained. The board could not suddenly announce sibling logic to the city. It could only continue posting classes. So Gao added one stripped line at lower corner beneath the day's usual burdens:

split tide by witness where class and water divide

The yard hated it instantly.

One woman said, "What does that mean."

Gao answered, "Enough."

At White Heron, Wen received the new branch strip by runner and read it twice.

"Attached source."

Qiu looked over his shoulder. "Repellent."

"Yes."

"Necessary."

"Yes."

Suyi, who had not been asked and therefore understood more than adults preferred, said, "It means two truths arrived holding each other and the water cannot keep them that way."

No one corrected her because there was nothing to correct.

At Reed Bank, Widow Fu reacted with harsher approval.

"About time. The river has been producing attached truths since before clerks learned sleeves."

She accepted Huan's splice samples on the strength of the new line, but she sent back one condition written so sharply the brush nearly cut the paper:

Mesh hand may arrive from attached source. Attached source may not remain attached inside loft.

Lin read that and said, "She continues to be the best legislator among us."

Widow He kept them through the morning under matshed witness. Tao counted mooring pegs. Huan rewound a split cord with the patient fury of someone refusing to waste stillness.

Widow He entered the hold in her own ledger:

two from one source split pending water no family speeches

At second bell branch water favored Tao first.

He stood when Lin came for him and did not move toward the boat until Huan said, "Count before you answer anything."

"I know."

"Count twice if they are stupid."

"I know."

Widow He put the branch strip into Lin's hand. "If White Heron refuses the boy, he returns here, not to the street. Write that somewhere worth keeping."

Xu did.

return to source witness if first receiving surface fails

Attached truth required one other necessity: not just split, but lawful recoil.

Shen received the day's abstract at records court before either body reached water. The new line appeared there in stripped form only:

one branch boy release from attached source pending branch window, one mesh hand from attached source pending first useful cove, split by class and water under shared witness.

He did not know their names. He did not know their relation. He knew at once that the road had widened again.

He wrote:

Attached source indicates route now linking multiple class dispositions under one originating witness. Observe whether such split movements recur and whether return-to-source lines emerge as stable necessity.

No accusation, only appetite.

That afternoon the branch receipt came back clean from White Heron:

branch boy received from attached source rail count trial fed

Huan read the word fed when Marta brought the copy to the matshed. She nodded once, as if a city that could not promise reunion had at least done arithmetic correctly for one meal.

Her own water had not yet turned.

So she waited beneath Widow He's roof while the cove decided, not abandoned, not consoled, only counted in the new sentence they had dragged into existence.

By dusk the attached release had not yet finished. But the page existed, and with it a fresh proof of what South Gate had been learning since Marta first touched it: truth did not become simpler when written more honestly. It merely stopped hiding where the difficulty lived.
