Chapter 127 — Days West

The review room in Mindelo faced the harbor with the kind of confidence institutions usually borrowed from windows when the file itself would not support them.

White walls. Pitchers. Fan. A long table. Outside, ferries and freighters moving in blue water that the room had already decided to treat as scenery rather than witness.

Celina arranged the pages before anyone else sat down. Not by office. By day.

One: Guinea-Bissau prevention notice, day 0, 21:48.

Two: Cacheu yard sale, day 1, 00:06.

Three: outer slip van, day 1, 00:39.

Four: reefer sighting, day 4, 11:22.

Five: Mindelo quay transfer, day 5, 06:12.

Six: ward admission notes, day 5 onward.

Seven: death, day 7.

Eight: Binta's identification of the watch.

At the end of the table sat the monitor link to Bissau. Binta and Nene side by side. The twin cheap watch on the desk between them.

Across from Celina: a hospital registry attorney, a maritime rescue liaison, and the ombuds representative from São Vicente who had learned enough from harbor work to distrust every use of the word unresolved on principle.

The attorney opened with category language.

"This review concerns a possible delayed identification of an unidentified foreign national-"

Celina cut in.

"No. It concerns a route you have been trying to cut into days."

She touched the pages one by one.

"Day zero, Guinea-Bissau claims prevention."

"Day one, Cacheu sells twelve jackets, watch cord, and a launch."

"Day four, commercial reefer sights twelve aboard and logs the watch and the sister's name."

"Day five, this quay takes twelve off the sea and the critical male first."

"Day seven, your ward records the same watch, the same question about Binta, and then suddenly discovers religion about elapsed time."

The rescue liaison spread his hands.

"Multi-day drift creates evidentiary complexity."

Celina slid Marta's note forward.

"No," she said. "Multi-day drift creates administrative opportunity."

Noor tapped the quay tag.

"Twelve at launch. Twelve on the reefer. Twelve at quay. The count did not drift. Why did your certainty?"

The registry attorney looked at the family identification sheet.

"The hospital cannot certify route continuity merely because a personal object survives admission."

Binta lifted her twin watch into frame.

"It is not merely an object. I painted the blue dot at eleven. I braided the fishing line when the strap failed. My brother carried it through launch, reefer transfer, quay, and your ward while asking whether the day was still the same for me. If you still require the Atlantic to say more than that before you give his body back its route, then what you lack is not evidence. It is nerve."

Nene added only:

"Name my son where you finished him."

The rescue liaison turned to the reefer summary.

"Commercial sightings do not always preserve formal origin."

Celina's answer came flat and clean.

"No. They preserve bodies, count, and speech under conditions your ministries later sanitize. You do not get to demote a ship because the ocean made it first to honesty."

She set the ward note beside the reefer line:

The ombuds representative read the chain in silence, then looked at the attorney.

"Can registry identify on convergent basis of launch continuity, ship continuity, quay continuity, ward continuity, property continuity, and family identification?"

The attorney did not answer quickly enough.

"Yes," he said.

"Can rescue continue calling origin unresolved where the route remains intact across all seven days?"

The liaison exhaled.

"No."

Celina placed the correction form in front of them.

"Then stop charging the Atlantic rent for your delay."

The attorney wrote first. Plainly.

Unknown adult male admitted alive from rescue transfer and deceased on Ward Three identified as Saliou Djalo on convergent basis of departure continuity, ship continuity, harbor transfer continuity, ward continuity, family identification, and retained watch property.

The ombuds representative added:

Multi-day interval and westward drift do not sever route continuity in this matter. Registry and rescue files to be amended accordingly and counterpart authorities notified.

The rescue liaison signed last. With the expression of a man forced to discover that long and uncertain had never actually been the same word.

On the screen, Binta lowered the watch. Nene did not move. She watched the signatures.

Micah, from the wall:

"Good."

Outside the harbor window, the Atlantic kept moving under the same light. Inside, the days kept one line at last.
