Chapter 16: The Name That Did Not Come Home
The phone rang at ten-twelve on Wednesday morning, May twentieth, and Yvonne picked it up on the second ring because Yvonne had been picking up the phone in this kitchen for two weeks now, since the doctor's visit, since the long quiet conversation she had had with her own assistant principal in which she had explained that she would be working three days a week from her mother's kitchen until further notice and the assistant principal had said Yvonne, the school will be there.
She listened. She nodded. She handed the phone to her mother.
"Mama. It's a Loretta Crenshaw. She is calling from her car. She is in town from Birmingham. She wants to know if she can come by for thirty minutes."
Mama Tate did not, at first, take the phone.
She had been at the kitchen table, in the slow steady morning work of copying names from the prayer book into the new composition book — three names to a page, two-inch block letters, the way she had been copying for three weeks, the way she would now be copying for the rest of the spring. Her hand had been steady this morning. The coffee had been good. The day had been arranging itself, before the phone rang, into the shape of an ordinary Wednesday, which was the kind of shape she had come to receive with quiet thanksgiving in any week the Lord chose to give her one.
The name Loretta Crenshaw arrived in the kitchen with the small specific weight of a name from before.
She knew Loretta Crenshaw. She had not seen Loretta Crenshaw since 2014, at the funeral of Sister Ettie May Crenshaw, who had been Loretta's mother and Daphne's mother, and who had been, in the years between 1968 and 2014, one of the eight women on the Mothers' Board at Mt. Calvary who had carried the prayer practice of that church on their shoulders without ever needing to be thanked.
Daphne.
The name Daphne had not been said aloud in this kitchen in fifteen years.
Mama Tate took the phone.
"Loretta."
"Mother Tate. I am sorry to call without warning. I am in town. I have a thing in my car you ought to receive in person. I would not, in twenty thousand miles of any other errand, have called without warning. Today I am asking. May I come by."
"You come on, baby. We are at the kitchen table. The pot is on. You come right now."
"I will be there in fifteen minutes."
She hung up.
Mama Tate set the phone down on the table. She did not, for a moment, move.
Yvonne — who was at the counter with the small pile of dishes from breakfast, who had been listening — turned slowly. She looked at her mother.
"Mama. Who is Loretta Crenshaw?"
"Sit down, baby."
Yvonne sat.
"I am going to tell you this fast because the woman is fifteen minutes away. Loretta Crenshaw is the older sister of Daphne Crenshaw. Daphne Crenshaw was a girl in the youth group at Mt. Calvary in the early eighties. She was eighteen years old when she ran. She had been struggling with the same demon Calvin Pruitt was struggling with — heroin, mostly, then later other things; the city was full of it then. Her mother, Sister Ettie May, was on the Mothers' Board with me. Sister Ettie May and I prayed for that girl together for twenty-six years. We prayed for her every morning. Sister Ettie May went home in 2014 still praying. I have been praying for Daphne since 1981. Forty-five years. Daphne has never, in all that time, written to her family or come home or, as far as I know, gotten free."
"Mama."
"Yes, baby."
"What is in the car."
"Baby. I do not know. I have an idea. Loretta did not say. But I think I know."
"Tell me."
"Loretta is bringing me news."
"Bad news."
"Probably bad news. Not always. But the way Loretta said a thing you ought to receive in person — that is the language of a woman bringing the kind of news you do not put in the mail. I have been a Mother of the Church long enough to know the language. The news is, I think, that Daphne is dead."
Yvonne did not, at first, speak.
After a moment she said: "Mama. Are you all right?"
"I am, baby. I have been preparing for this news for forty years. I knew, after about twenty years, that the Lord was probably not going to bring Daphne home the way I had been asking. I did not stop praying. I changed the prayer. The prayer I have been praying for the last twenty years is not Lord, bring her home before she dies. The prayer I have been praying for the last twenty years is Lord, You know where she is, You know what she needs, You know the inside of her mind, do what You will with her. Be with her in whatever room she is in. Reach her if You can. Hold her if You can't."
"Mama —"
"I am telling you this, Yvonne, because you have been watching me have receipts for three weeks. Calvin came home. Patrice came home. Naomi came home. The Lord has been letting me see the answered prayers for a month. I have not, in those three weeks, told you that there are names in my book that did not come home. I am telling you now because Loretta is fifteen minutes away and she is going to tell me that one of those names has died, and I do not want you to think — when you watch my face receive that news — that the keeping has failed. The keeping has not failed. The keeping is what the keeping is. The Lord does what the Lord does with the keeping. We do not always get to know."
She paused.
"You sit with me when she comes, baby. You do not say anything. You watch how I receive it. You will need to know how to receive it one day, when the book is yours. Not every prayer comes home in the visible. Some prayers come home where only the Lord can see. We trust Him with the invisible. The trusting is the hardest part of the work. I have not, in fifty years, mastered it. I have only practiced it. Today is one of the practices."
"Yes, Mama."
"Now. Get the good blue plates out. Loretta is family. We will give her family plates. You make the coffee fresh. I will go put on a clean blouse. The blouse I have on has flour from your biscuits."
"Yes, Mama."
Loretta Crenshaw rang the doorbell at ten twenty-six.
She was sixty-seven years old. She had been a special education teacher in Birmingham for thirty-three years, retired now five years. She was tall like her mother had been tall, and she was carrying, in both arms, a small cardboard box about the size of a large Bible, taped on the seams, with her sister's name written on the top in a marker hand that was clearly Sister Ettie May's.
Mama Tate met her at the door.
The two women looked at each other for a long moment without speaking. Loretta's eyes were already wet. She had, presumably, cried in the car on the way over. Loretta had been crying, in different rooms in different cities, for two months.
"Loretta."
"Mother Tate."
"Come in, baby. Yvonne has the coffee on. We will go to the kitchen."
Loretta came in. She set the box on the kitchen table without being asked, the way you set down a thing you have been carrying for days and which you do not want to keep carrying through the welcome.
Yvonne poured coffee. Yvonne nodded at Loretta. Yvonne sat at the table.
Loretta sat across from Mama Tate. Her hands went into her lap.
"Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"My sister Daphne died on the seventh of April."
"I had thought, baby. When you called. I had thought."
"She died in St. Louis. In a motel. Alone. The cause of death — they wrote acute fentanyl toxicity. She was sixty-three. She had been using since she was seventeen, with — there were stretches. She had stretches she was clean. The longest one was a year, in 2009. She always went back."
"Yes, baby."
"She had been with a man, the last six years, who was older than her, and who — who got her into the harder things she had not been into before. He died last fall. She was on her own after that. She had been calling me every two or three months from a number that was different every time. I would answer. We would talk for ten minutes. She would not tell me where she was. I would beg her to come home. She would say she could not. She would say she would call again. She would hang up. I always — I always thought, after each call, that maybe she would come. She did not."
Loretta paused.
"The last call was in February. She was in St. Louis. She would not give me an address. She said she was thinking about going to a women's shelter. She said she would call me from there if she went. She did not call again."
"Loretta."
"I called the police in St. Louis in March because she had been quiet for too long. They — they could not find her. She was not registered anywhere. The body was found in the motel room on the seventh of April. She had checked in under a false name. They identified her by the dental records, which I had asked the dentist in Birmingham to send to St. Louis after the missing person report. They called me on the eleventh."
"Lord."
"I drove to St. Louis. I — I had to identify her. Mother Tate. She did not look like my sister. She looked like a woman who had been hard-used for forty years. Her face was — her face was a face that had been through every room I had been afraid she was in."
She could not, for a moment, speak.
Mama Tate reached across the table and took Loretta's hand.
She held it.
She did not, this morning, say anything for a long time.
After a long stretch she said, softly: "Loretta. You did not fail her."
"Mother Tate. I —"
"You did not fail her. Look at me, baby."
Loretta lifted her eyes.
"You called her every two or three months for forty-five years, baby. You answered every time she called. You begged her every time. You did not abandon her. You did not give up. You buried your mother and kept calling. You buried your husband and kept calling. You have been a faithful sister for half a century. Daphne's death is not on you. You are not going to let yourself put it on you. I am telling you this in my own kitchen, on the authority of an old woman who has watched many sisters carry many ghosts, and I am telling you: you are not the reason. You did the loving. You did all the loving you knew how to do. The choosing was hers. The Lord, who knows the inside of the choosing, will sort the rest. You set the carrying down. You set it down today. You hear me, baby?"
Loretta wept.
She wept the way a woman in her sixties weeps when she has been waiting forty-five years for someone to tell her the sentence she has not been able to tell herself. She wept hard and quietly. Yvonne, at the side of the table, did not move. Mama Tate held Loretta's hand. The kitchen received the weeping.
After a long time Loretta lifted her face. She wiped it with the back of her hand. She looked at Mama Tate.
"Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"There is more."
"Tell me, baby."
"The box. It is from Mama. From 2014. Mama left a note."
She pulled a small folded piece of paper from her pocket. She unfolded it. She did not read it aloud. She handed it across the table.
Mama Tate took the paper. She put on her reading glasses, which she had had on her head since the morning vigil and which she had, for some weeks now, been putting on more often than she wanted. She read.
The handwriting was Sister Ettie May Crenshaw's, slow and careful, in the same blue ballpoint Mama Tate herself favored.
Loretta. This box is for Mother Tate when I am gone. You take it to her. Do not open it. The box has the letters Mother Tate wrote to your sister over the years that I forwarded when I could find her, which was most of them. The box has the small Bible Mother Tate gave Daphne in 1981 the week before she ran, which Daphne took with her and which she sent back to me in 1992 with no note in a package from Cleveland and which I have kept for her. The box has the picture of Daphne in the youth choir in 1981 with Mother Tate standing behind her. The box has my own letters to Daphne that came back to me unopened.
Tell Mother Tate that I never stopped praying for my baby. Tell her Daphne never came home. Tell her I am leaving the box because Mother Tate has been carrying my daughter with me for thirty-three years and the carrying does not end with my dying, and I want her to have what is left. Tell her thank you for me. Tell her she did not fail. Tell her she was the only Mother of the Church who, in the year my daughter ran, did not look at me with the look that asked what I had done wrong as her mother. She looked at me with the look that said the Lord is the only one who knows what we did or did not do, and we are going to keep praying anyway. I have been a member of Mt. Calvary for forty-six years. That look has been worth all of them.

Mama Tate took her reading glasses off slowly.
She did not, at first, speak.
She set the note down on the table. She put her hand flat over it.
She closed her eyes.
She sat for a long time.
The kitchen was quiet. Loretta had not moved. Yvonne, on her side, had begun, at some point, to cry without making noise — the small steady tears of a woman who had been listening to her mother's life expand by another long room she had not, until this hour, known existed.
After a long time Mama Tate opened her eyes.
She looked at Loretta.
"Loretta."
"Yes, Mother Tate."
"Your mother and I had a covenant about your sister."
"Yes, Mother Tate."
"I want you to know, before you leave this kitchen, that I have prayed for Daphne every single morning since June of 1981. I have not skipped a morning. I have not, in forty-five years, taken her name out of the book. I will not, today, tell you that I know what happened in that motel room in St. Louis on the seventh of April. I do not know. The Lord knows. The Lord, who has been with your sister in every room she has ever been in, who has been with her in every needle and every bed and every man and every false name, was with her in that motel room too. What He did with her in the last hour — whether He brought her in or not — I cannot tell you. I do not have the right to claim what only He can see. But I can tell you that He was there. The keeping was real. The keeping reached the room. What He did with the keeping — that is in His hand. I am going to trust Him with that. I am asking you, baby, to trust Him with that too."
Loretta nodded.
She did not, at first, speak.
After a while she said: "Mother Tate. Mama said you would say something like that."
"Your mama and I had been at the same prayer-floor for three decades. We worked the same field. We learned to think alike. I do not have anything to say about your sister your mama did not already prepare you to hear."
"Yes, Mother Tate."
"Now, baby. I am going to do a thing in front of you, and I want you to watch it, because your mama would have wanted you to. Yvonne, baby, bring me the prayer book."
Yvonne rose. She walked to the front room. She came back with the book. She set it in front of her mother.
Mama Tate opened it.
She turned to the legacy pages — past Eldridge, past her own mother, past Calvin Pruitt with his line and his date and the word Free, past Patrice with hers, past the long quiet column of the dead and the held — and her finger went, with the certainty of forty-five years, to Daphne Crenshaw.
The name was there.
The name was in the same blue ballpoint Sister Ettie May had used in her note, because Mama Tate and Sister Ettie May had bought the same brand of pen at the same drugstore in 1981 and had not, in forty-five years, switched. The handwriting was younger. The page was wrinkled at the corner where Mama Tate's thumb had been resting on the entry for forty-five years of mornings.
She picked up the small ballpoint pen from the spine of the book.
She drew a single careful line through the name.
She did not, beside the line, write Free. She did not, beside the line, write Died well.
She wrote, in the small careful hand: April 7, 2026. St. Louis. Held by the Lord. The end was not what we asked. We trust the Lord with the inside of it.
She underlined We trust the Lord.
She closed her eyes.
Lord, she said, in the kitchen, in front of Loretta and Yvonne, in the small interior way she had been doing the saying-without-words for fifty years. I have carried this name forty-five years. You have carried her longer. You know the inside of her last hour. I do not. I am asking You to do for her, in whatever room she went into next, what the keeping on this side could not do. I trust You with her. I have always trusted You with her. The trusting is what the keeping was for. I lay her down. I lay her down in Your hand. Do with her what You have already done.
She paused.
And Lord. Hold Loretta. Hold the older sister who has been carrying the younger one for forty-five years. Tell her, in a way she can hear it, that she did the loving she had to do, and that the rest is Yours, and that the rest has been Yours for a long time, and that she can set down the carrying she could not carry and never could carry, because the carrying was never hers to begin with. It was always Yours. We were just borrowed. Lord, set Loretta free.
She opened her eyes.
She looked across the table at Loretta.
Loretta was crying again. Quietly. The kind of crying that was the small loosening of a long-clenched thing inside.
"Baby."
"Yes, Mother Tate."
"Your sister is in the Lord's hand. You set down the rest. You go home to Birmingham this afternoon and you sleep tonight in the bed of a woman who has done the loving she had to do. You hear me?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"Now. We are going to open the box together. We are going to do it slow. We are going to honor what your mama set aside. Then we are going to eat lunch together because Yvonne made enough biscuits for three. Then you are going to drive home with the small empty box that the things came in, because the things — the letters, the Bible, the picture — those stay here, where your mama wanted them. The empty box you carry to the Birmingham dump. The carrying ends with the box."
"Yes, ma'am."
They opened the box.
The letters were on top — Mama Tate's letters to Daphne, addressed to Sister Ettie May for forwarding, one or two a year for forty-five years, from 1981 to 2013. There were forty-six of them. Some of them had been forwarded successfully and had then been returned through some chain Mama Tate had never tracked. Some of them had stayed with Sister Ettie May because she had not, in some years, known where Daphne was. They were all there. The earliest one was dated August 1981, when Daphne would have been two months gone, in Mama Tate's young careful hand on cream stationery that had once been her wedding gift from her mother-in-law and which she had used until 1995 when she had run out.
Mama Tate looked at them.
She did not, this afternoon, read them. She set them aside. They would, she said quietly, be read in a private hour later.
The Bible was next.
It was a small black leather King James, the kind that had been sold for two dollars at the Christian bookstore on Lamar in 1980. The cover was scuffed, but the binding was intact. Mama Tate took it gently into her hands. She opened it to the front cover. There, in her own young hand — a hand from 1981, a hand more confident than her hand of 2026 — was written: To Daphne Crenshaw. June 1981. The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. — Mother Tate.
Daphne had taken the Bible with her when she ran.
Daphne had carried it, presumably, for eleven years.
In 1992 she had sent it back, with no note, in a package from Cleveland.
Mama Tate held it in her hands a long moment.
She turned to Psalm 23. She did not need to look. The Bible opened to the page on its own, the way a Bible opens to the page that has been read most. The page was creased. The page was — Mama Tate looked closely — slightly stained. There were small smudges in the margin that might have been tears or might have been other things.
Mama Tate set the Bible down on the table. She put her hand flat on the open page.
She said quietly: "Loretta. Your sister read this."
"Mama."
"She read this many times. The book has been carried in pockets. The page has been opened to many times. She did not, in eleven years of running, throw this Bible away. She kept it. She read it. Whatever else we do not know about the inside of your sister's life, we know that she sat somewhere — in some room, in some city, on some night — with the Twenty-third Psalm open under her thumb and read the words. The Lord met her in the reading. We do not know how often. We do not know what came of it. We know only that the Bible was open in her hand. That is more than we knew an hour ago."
Loretta sobbed once.
She put her hand over her mouth.
She nodded.
Mama Tate closed the Bible gently. She did not, today, put it back in the box. She set it on the side of the table where she would, later, carry it to her dressing-table drawer where her own mother's Bible from 1939 lived.
The picture was last.
It was a five-by-seven, black and white, taken at a youth choir program at Mt. Calvary in the spring of 1981. Daphne was in the front row with five other girls. She was sixteen. She was wearing a white blouse and a long dark skirt and the small silver cross her grandmother had given her at her baptism in 1972. She was smiling — a small careful smile, the kind Daphne had favored, which had not given everything away. Behind her, with her hand resting lightly on Daphne's shoulder, was Mama Tate at thirty-seven, in the lavender dress that had been her best Sunday dress, the same dress Mama Tate had worn last week for the Williamsons.
Mama Tate looked at the picture for a long time.
She set it down beside the Bible.
She did not speak.
Loretta watched her. Yvonne watched her.
After a long while Mama Tate said: "I am going to put this picture in the front of the prayer book. Where the verse is. The first page. So that every morning I open the book I will see her face. I have been writing her name for forty-five years. I will spend the rest of my time looking at her face."
Loretta nodded. She could not, for a moment, speak.
Yvonne brought the prayer book over. She helped her mother slip the picture carefully into the front of it, behind the cover, where the small leather pocket had been holding, since 1974, only the verse.
The picture went in. The book closed over it.
They ate lunch.
Loretta ate two biscuits and half a bowl of beans Yvonne had warmed up from the fridge, and she drank the coffee, and she stayed at the kitchen table for another hour while the three of them talked about the church in 1981, and about Sister Ettie May, and about Loretta's grandchildren in Birmingham, and about nothing for a long stretch in the middle.
At one-thirty Loretta said she had to go. She had a five-hour drive.
Mama Tate walked her to the door.
At the door Loretta turned.
"Mother Tate."
"Loretta."
"I do not know how to thank you."
"You do not have to, baby. Your mother thanked me thirty years ago. The thanks has been on file. You go home."
"I will, Mother Tate."
"Loretta."
"Yes, ma'am."
"You go home and sleep. You do not call me unless you need to. I will be here. The keeping is over. The keeping was never on you. You are free, baby."
Loretta's face crumpled one more time.
She nodded. She kissed Mama Tate on the cheek. She walked to her car with the small empty cardboard box in one hand — Mama Tate had taped the seams back the way Sister Ettie May had taped them, because Loretta had said she wanted to take the box itself to the Birmingham dump because she had been seeing the box in her closet for ten years and wanted, this week, to be done with seeing it.
The car pulled away.
Mama Tate stood on the porch and watched it go.
When the car turned the corner, Mama Tate did not, immediately, move.
After a long while Yvonne came out and stood beside her.
"Mama."
"Yes, baby."
"You are tired."
"I am tired."
"You want to lie down?"
"In a minute. I want to stand here for one more minute. I want the wind to come through."
The wind came through. The pecan tree shifted. Down the block a small dog began to bark. The afternoon was the afternoon.
After a while Mama Tate said: "Yvonne."
"Yes, Mama."
"That was a hard one, baby."
"Yes, Mama."
"Some of them are like that. Most of them are like that, in fact. The ones who come back are the small percentage. The ones who do not come back the visible way are the larger percentage. I do not — I do not have an explanation. I have never had an explanation. The Lord does what He does. We trust Him with the inside. The trusting is most of the work. The receipts of these last three weeks — Calvin, Patrice, Naomi, your father, Mama Funmi — those have been a kindness from the Lord I did not earn. He has been letting me see. He has not been letting me see because I deserve it. He has been letting me see because He is preparing me for the going, and He is showing me, in the visible, what He has been doing in the invisible all along."
"Mama —"
"I am not finished, baby."
"Yes, Mama."
"What I want you to know — what I want you to write down somewhere, in your own book, when the day comes — is that the keeping does not depend on the receipts. The keeping was real for Daphne whether or not she came home. The keeping is real for everyone in the book whether or not we ever see what comes of it. The book is not a ledger of successes. The book is a record of presence. We were present. The Lord was present. He did what He did with our presence. The day Daphne died in that motel room in St. Louis, she did not die alone. She had two old women and the Lord in the room with her, by the keeping. We do not know what passed in the last seconds. We trust Him with the seconds. That is the whole of it. That is the work."
Yvonne was crying again.
"Yes, Mama."
"You sit with the next keeper, when she comes after you. You teach her what I just taught you. You will know the words when the time is right. The Lord puts the words in your mouth when you have been at the practice long enough. You will be at the practice long enough."
"Yes, Mama."
They stood for another long minute on the porch in the May light.
Then Yvonne walked her mother inside, and helped her into Eldridge's chair, and pulled the small quilt over her knees, and Mama Tate slept for the rest of the afternoon, with the prayer book on the side table beside her — the small black-and-white picture of Daphne Crenshaw, age sixteen, in the youth choir at Mt. Calvary in the spring of 1981, now permanently inside the front cover, her face the new front of a book that would be read by Mama Tate's hand for as long as her hand could read, and after that by Tiana's, and after that by whoever Tiana passed it to.
The cloud of witnesses around the small brick house on Park Avenue had grown today by a sister set free. The Lord, who held the inside of the seconds no one else could see, held her.
