Chapter 20: The Overnight
The Hightowers' silver Camry pulled into the driveway at four-fifteen on Saturday, June twenty-seventh, and Sheryl Hightower got out first with the small pink overnight bag, and Reggie got out second, and Naomi — who had been buckled in the back since Whitehaven, who had been told three times on the drive over that she would be staying at Mother Tate's house tonight, who had repeated, three times in the back seat, I know, Grandma; I have my dinosaur — climbed out of the car seat herself and walked up the path holding her grandmother's hand.
She was wearing the red sneakers.
She was also, today, wearing a small denim dress and a white cardigan and her hair in two careful Afro puffs, and she carried, tucked under one arm, a small green plastic dinosaur that Mama Tate had been told, on the previous two visits, was named Mr. Apatosaurus because Naomi had insisted on saying the whole word every time she introduced him.
Mama Tate was on the porch in the wicker chair.
Yvonne was beside her in the second wicker chair. Tiana was at the screen door. Carl had been at the kitchen table all afternoon shelling peas Yvonne had bought from the produce stand on Lamar, because Carl had decided three weeks ago that whenever Naomi came over, Carl would be in the kitchen, because Naomi had taken to him on the third visit in a way the Hightowers had registered with quiet relief, and Carl had decided that the small steady presence of a quiet older man was a thing the four-year-old could be allowed to count on.
Naomi reached the bottom of the porch steps.
She looked up at Mama Tate.
"Mother Tate. I am here for the overnight."
"You are, baby."
"Grandma packed my dinosaur. And my bear. And my pajamas with the moons. And my toothbrush. And the book about the rabbit."
"That is everything, baby."
"Grandma says I have to sleep in the spare room. The room with the blue blanket. Yvonne showed me last week."
"That is the room, baby."
"And I can come find Yvonne if I get scared."
"You can. Yvonne is sleeping in the room across the hall. She will hear you."
"Okay."
She climbed the steps slowly, one at a time, with Mr. Apatosaurus under her arm.
She came over to Mama Tate. She did not, today, ask about sitting near. She climbed up into the second wicker chair beside her — the one Yvonne had moved over to make room — and she sat with her feet not quite touching the boards and her dinosaur on her lap.
She looked out at the pecan tree.
"Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"The pecan tree has more hands than last time."
"It does, baby. The hands grow through June."
"Will they have pecans?"
"In October, baby. The hands turn into pecans in October. We will pick some up off the porch and you can take them home to your grandma."
"Okay."
She was quiet for a moment. She watched the tree.
"Mother Tate. Is Mother Wells in the tree."
Mama Tate did not, for a moment, breathe. She had not, in the three weeks since the funeral, mentioned Mother Wells in front of Naomi. The Hightowers had not, as far as she knew, mentioned her either.
"Why do you ask, baby?"
"Grandma told me a Mother of your church died last month. Grandma said the people who go to heaven sometimes come into things on earth so we can see them. She said sometimes they come into birds. Sometimes into wind. Sometimes into the small light on a leaf. I was wondering if Mother Wells came into your tree."
Mama Tate did not, at first, answer.
She looked at the tree. The tree was full of small green hands, the way the pecan tree had been full of small green hands every June for sixty-four years. The wind moved through it.
"Baby. I do not think Mother Wells came into the tree. I think Mother Wells is in heaven now, with the Lord, where she is doing the work she did down here, only better. But I think the Lord lets us notice the world more after one of His old keepers goes. The wind in this tree this afternoon is a little more — a little more visible — than it was three months ago. That may be Mother Wells. It may be the Lord. It may be both. I do not know how to draw the line. I do not, today, need to."
"Okay."
Naomi accepted this with the small clean acceptance of a four-year-old who had been raised by people who answered her real questions seriously.
She sat with the tree a moment longer.
Then she said: "Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"Can I help with the peas?"
"You can, baby. Carl is in the kitchen. He has a whole bowl. He will let you help. You wash your hands first."
"Okay."
She slid off the wicker chair. She set Mr. Apatosaurus on the chair where she had been sitting — He will sit here while I work — and she went into the house, where Carl met her at the kitchen door and walked her to the sink. The screen closed behind her. Mama Tate could hear the small steady stream of a four-year-old's voice and Carl's low patient answers from the kitchen, the way she had heard Marcus's small steady stream and Eldridge's low patient answers from the kitchen in 1998.
The house held the sound.
Sheryl Hightower came up the porch steps slowly with the pink overnight bag.
"Mother Tate."
"Sheryl."
"I have her bedtime list in the bag. The book she wants. The bear she sleeps with. The night-light that has to be on the dresser, not the floor, or she gets confused when she wakes up. The small cup of water she likes by the bed."
"I will get the cup ready, Sister."
"Reggie says we can come pick her up tomorrow morning at nine. Or earlier if she has a hard night. The phone is on. Either of us can be here in twenty minutes."
"Sheryl."
"Yes, ma'am."
"She is going to have a fine night. Tiana is going to do bath. Yvonne is going to do story. I am going to sit with her until she falls asleep. Yvonne will be across the hall. Carl will sleep on the couch in the front room, because Carl has decided he is on Naomi-watch tonight, and you cannot, when Carl Brooks decides a thing, talk him out of it. We have planned this for six weeks. She will be fine. You will be fine. You drive home with Reggie. You eat the dinner Reggie has been planning all week. You sleep. You come tomorrow at nine. The little girl will be here. We will all have eaten breakfast. The pecan tree will be in the same place."
Sheryl smiled. It was a wet smile.
"Mother Tate. I have not slept a night without that little girl in the house since November."
"I know, Sister."
"Reggie either."
"I know."
"This is — this is a thing for us too. Not just for her."
"I know it is, Sister. The Lord has been preparing us all for tonight. Tonight is small. Tonight is — Sheryl, tonight is forty pages into a long book. We will have many more. You and Reggie will have many more nights like the one you are about to have. The little girl will have many more nights like the one she is about to have. We are not, this evening, doing anything dramatic. We are doing the next page. The next page is a Saturday in June where she sleeps over at her great-grandmother's house. That is all. It is allowed to be small."
"Yes, Mother Tate."
Sheryl put the pink bag down by the screen door.
She went inside. She crouched in the kitchen doorway. She and Naomi had a small careful goodbye conversation that Mama Tate, on the porch, did not eavesdrop on, because Mama Tate had decided weeks ago that the goodbyes between the grandmother and the granddaughter were private business. She heard the small steady murmur. After a moment Sheryl came back out, with her own face wet.
"Reggie."
Reggie was at the bottom of the steps.
"Yes, baby."
"Take me home. We have to go now or I will not go."
"All right, baby."
He helped her into the car. He nodded at Mama Tate from the driver's seat — the small careful nod of a man who had been entrusting something tonight that he had not, in his life, ever entrusted to anyone outside of his wife — and he backed out slowly.
The Camry turned at the corner.
Mama Tate sat on the porch a moment longer.
Then she stood, slowly, and went inside.
The afternoon went the way good afternoons in a house full of family go. Naomi shelled peas at the kitchen table with Carl for forty-five minutes, with the small careful method she brought to all her tasks, and Carl praised her hands without overdoing it, and the small bowl of peas grew into a large bowl. At five-thirty Yvonne started the rice. At six Tiana came in from the porch where she had been on her phone with someone — she did not say who, and Mama Tate did not ask, but Mama Tate registered the small private smile on her granddaughter's face when she came in and noted it for the long file of things that would, in time, ask for asking — and she set the table for five.
Marcus called at six-twenty from Atlanta to say good night to Naomi.
Marcus had called every day for the last five weeks. He had been driving from Atlanta to Memphis every other weekend. He had begun, two weekends ago, taking Naomi out alone on Saturday afternoons — first for ice cream at the place on South Highland, then last week for a small careful walk at the Botanic Garden, where Naomi had named every plant she could see and Marcus had taken photographs of her hands. He had not, in any of those visits, presumed. He had been the one who arrived.
Naomi took the phone from Mama Tate.
"Hi, Mr. Marcus."
"Hi, Naomi. I hear you're at Mother Tate's tonight."
"Yes. I shelled peas with Carl. There were many."
"How many?"
"More than my hand could hold."
"That's a lot of peas."
"It is. Mr. Marcus."
"Yes, Naomi."
"You should come next time I do the overnight. We will both sleep in the spare room. There are two beds in there. Yvonne told me."
A small pause.
"Naomi. I would like that very much."
"Okay. You ask Mother Tate when."
"I will, Naomi. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Mr. Marcus."
She handed the phone back to Mama Tate with the small clean satisfaction of a four-year-old who had concluded a phone call competently. She went back to her bowl of peas. Mama Tate held the phone to her ear.
"Marcus."
"Mama Tate."
"You heard her."
"I heard her."
"You think you can come in three weeks? The Hightowers want her here three Saturdays from now too. The plan is forming."
"I can come, Mama."
"Good, son."
"Mama Tate. Tell me the truth. How are you today?"
"Today is a good day, baby. Tuesday was bad. Wednesday morning was bad. Thursday was good. Today is good. The disease moves the way it moves. I am all right. I have my people in the kitchen. I have a four-year-old shelling peas with Carl. I have the green book on my side table. I have the new book on the kitchen table. I am, today, exactly where the Lord wanted me. That is enough for today."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Now. Talk to your mother. She has been waiting."
She handed the phone to Yvonne. Yvonne went to the front room with it. Mama Tate sat at the kitchen table with Naomi and Carl, and the three of them finished the peas, and the rice came up, and the chicken Tiana had baked at four was carved, and dinner went on the table at six fifty-five.
They ate.
Naomi sat in the chair second from the wall — the chair Patrice Pinkston had sat in in 1989, the chair Patrice Williamson had sat in two months ago, the chair every younger woman who had been taken into this house in fifty years had been seated in, by the small instinct of Mama Tate that the second chair was the chair of welcome — and she ate two pieces of chicken and a small portion of peas she had shelled herself and a quarter cup of rice, and she drank her milk in three small sips, and she did not, at any point during the meal, complain.
Mama Tate watched her.
She watched her the way she had watched many small children at this table over the years — Yvonne, then Tiana, then Marcus, then a few of the church children Mama Tate had babysat in the nineties when Sister Loretta's daughter had needed a sitter. She watched the way Naomi held her fork — too high on the handle, the way four-year-olds held it — and she watched the way Naomi nodded at things Tiana said the way Naomi's mother had presumably nodded at things her own mother had said, and she watched the small particular gestures of a four-year-old great-granddaughter she had not, eight weeks ago, known existed.
She did not, during the meal, weep.
She had been doing the weeping in private, for two months, and she had learned which moments at the table were not for weeping. The dinner with the four-year-old was for eating. The weeping had its own time. Tonight, at the kitchen table at Park Avenue, with her family around her and a child she had been told about by her grandson on a Saturday morning in May eating chicken at her own table, she ate.
After dinner Tiana did the bath.
Tiana had, in the last month, become the household's bath-and-bedtime expert, because Tiana was a nurse and Tiana was also Naomi's second-favorite adult after Carl, and Tiana had a way with the small specific anxieties of a four-year-old in a new bathroom that Yvonne — who had not, in twenty-eight years, given a bath to a young child — had decided to defer to.
The bath took thirty minutes. Naomi sang in the bath. She sang a song she had learned at her preschool that Tiana, in the bathroom, did not recognize and did not, today, ask about. Tiana came out with Naomi wrapped in a towel and walked her to the spare room. Yvonne had laid out the pajamas with the moons. The night-light was on the dresser, where the bedtime list had specified.
Mama Tate sat in the small chair by the bed.
Yvonne, at the door, said: "Mama. You want me to do the story? Or are you doing it tonight?"
"I am doing it tonight, baby. You go sit on the porch with your husband. I will come find you when she is asleep."
"Yes, Mama."
The door closed gently.
Naomi climbed into the bed in her moon pajamas with Mr. Apatosaurus under one arm and the small bear under the other. She pulled the blue blanket up to her chin. She looked at Mama Tate.
"Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"Will you read the rabbit book?"
"I will, baby. But first, I want to ask you something."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Would it be all right with you if, before the rabbit book, I read you one short part out of an older book? It is a book my mother gave me when I was your age. It is the Bible, baby. I want to read you a small piece. The piece is the small piece my mother read me at bedtime when I was four years old. I have not read it to a four-year-old since I read it to your father when he was four."
Naomi thought about this.
"Yes, ma'am. I will listen."
"Thank you, baby."
Mama Tate rose. She went to the dressing table. She brought back the small black King James Bible that had belonged to her own mother — the one from 1939, the one whose binding was so soft from use that the spine had been re-stitched twice — and she sat down in the chair and she opened it carefully to the place where the page had been bookmarked since 1949 with a piece of pale blue ribbon.
Psalm twenty-three.
She did not, for a moment, read.
She set her hand on the page. She breathed.
Then she read, slowly, in the voice she had been reading scripture aloud in for sixty years:
"The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul."
Naomi watched her.
"He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me."
She paused. She looked at Naomi.
The little girl was watching her with the careful attention she gave to all instruction.
"Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil. My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
She closed the book.
She set her hand on it.
Naomi was quiet for a moment.
Then she said: "Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"My mama used to read me that one."
Mama Tate did not, for a long second, breathe.
"I know, baby. Your daddy told me."
"He did?"
"He did. He told me on a Saturday morning in May. He told me your mama used to read it to you and tell you it was the one she had been reading her whole life."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Baby. Your mama and I were reading the same psalm without knowing it. We were both being kept by the same scripture. The Lord was reading it over both of us."
The little girl took this in.
After a moment she said: "Mother Tate. I think my mama and you would have been friends."
Mama Tate could not, for a moment, speak.
"I think we would have, baby. I think the Lord arranged it that we were not friends in this life so that you and I could be friends now. The Lord arranges things. The arranging is not always what we would have asked. But the arranging is the arranging."
"Yes, ma'am."
"Now. The rabbit book."
She read the rabbit book. It was a small picture book about a small white rabbit who lost his blanket and had a long quiet evening looking for it and finally found it under his mother's chair. Mama Tate had read it three times before, at Naomi's insistence on the previous visits, and she had memorized the cadence. She read it the way Naomi had asked her to read it — slow on the page where the rabbit cried, fast on the page where the rabbit ran, slow again at the end.
By the last page Naomi's eyes were heavy.
"Mother Tate."
"Yes, baby."
"Will you sit until I sleep?"
"I will, baby."
"Sing the song my grandma sings."
"Baby. I do not know what your grandma sings. You will have to teach me one day."
"Okay. Sing one of yours."
Mama Tate thought.
She had not, in many years, sung anyone to sleep. She had sung Yvonne to sleep in 1968. She had sung Marcus to sleep in 1998 a few times when he had stayed over. She had not, since 1999 or so, sung a child to sleep.
She sang the small soft hymn her own mother had sung her in 1949.
She sang His Eye Is on the Sparrow, slowly, low, in the voice of an eighty-two-year-old woman who had not sung in a sick room in twenty years and whose voice was rougher than it had been but whose pitch was still — by some small mercy — true.
Naomi listened.
By the second verse she was asleep.
Mama Tate finished the verse anyway. Then she finished the third. She closed the book on her lap. She set her hand on the small bed for a moment. She rose.
She bent — slowly, the way she bent — and she kissed the little girl on the forehead.
She left the small night-light on. She closed the door gently behind her.
On the porch, Yvonne and Tiana were in the wicker chairs. Carl was at the bottom of the porch steps, leaning against the railing, with his cap in his hand.
Mama Tate came out. The screen closed.
"Mama," Yvonne said. "She down?"
"She is down, baby. She fell asleep on the second verse of Sparrow."
"You sang her Sparrow."
"I sang her Sparrow. It came up. I had not sung it in twenty years. The voice was there. The Lord left me the voice."
Yvonne smiled. She did not, immediately, say more.
Carl came up the porch steps. He took the small wooden chair from the corner. He sat down beside Tiana. The four of them — Mama Tate, Yvonne, Tiana, Carl — were in a small loose semicircle on the porch as the June light went amber.
After a long while Mama Tate said: "Tiana."
"Yes, Grandma."
"Bring me the books. All three of them. They are on the side table."
Tiana went inside. She came back with the prayer book and the new composition book and the small green book Mother Wells had given Mama Tate four weeks ago. She set them all in Mama Tate's lap.
Mama Tate held the three books.
She did not, for a moment, open any of them.
She looked at her daughter.
"Yvonne."
"Yes, Mama."
"You read the dead. The legacy pages. From the old book. You start with Eldridge. You go down. You read every name. The crossed-out ones with their dates. You read them in the small voice you read me yesterday morning."
"Yes, Mama."
"Tiana."
"Yes, Grandma."
"You read the new ones. You read them out of the composition book. Three to a page. You read all of them, the ones you wrote and the ones I added. You read Mother Wells's three names. You read them in the voice you have been reading them in to yourself when you do the morning."
"Yes, Grandma."
"Carl."
"Yes, Mama."
"You sit. You do not read. You bear witness. You are the man at the door tonight. The man at the door is the one who knows that the keepers are doing their work and who watches the door so the work can be done. You watch the door."
"Yes, Mama."
"And when they are finished — both of them — I will pray over the names. Not aloud. In the small interior way. You will know I am praying. You will not interrupt. When I am done I will close the books. We will go inside. Yvonne, you will sleep in the spare room across from the spare room with the little girl. Tiana, you will sleep on the couch. Carl, you will sleep on the loveseat in the front room because Carl Brooks has decided he is on Naomi-watch and Carl Brooks does not change his mind. I will sleep in my own bed. The house will hold us. The keeping will continue."
She paused.
"Begin, Yvonne."
Yvonne opened the prayer book. She turned to the legacy pages.
She read.
She read for eleven minutes. She read every name. She read Eldridge Tate, 1936 to 2008. She read her grandmother in Mississippi and her grandfather. She read Patricia Mae Hawkins and Sammy Lee. She read Jerome Brooks Sr., crossed April twenty-second, 2026, Died well. She read Calvin Pruitt, crossed April nineteenth, 2026, Free. She read Patrice Pinkston, crossed April twenty-ninth, 2026, Free, with a daughter, with a granddaughter named Ruth. She read Daphne Crenshaw, crossed April seventh, 2026, Held by the Lord. The end was not what we asked. We trust the Lord with the inside of it. She read Mother Wells of Mt. Calvary, crossed June first, 2026, Went home well. The keeping continues. She read every other name. The names of Sister Ettie May Crenshaw and Mother Cole and Sister Loretta and Pastor Briggs and Brother Wells and the long quiet column of the legacy dead.
When she finished, she closed the prayer book.
She set it back on Mama Tate's lap.
"Tiana."
Tiana opened the composition book. She turned to the front page.
She read the new names. She read in the small dry voice that was her own grandmother's voice somewhere in it. She read Stephen Pruitt and Brenda and Calvin Junior and Ola, twelve, named for Mama Tate. She read the Williamsons — Patrice and Maurice and Camille and Andre and Ruth, age seven. She read Naomi Hightower, age four, of Whitehaven, Daughter of Aliyah. She read Eunice Holcomb of Camden, Arkansas. She read Mama Funmi, Olufunmilayo Adetola Akinyele, of Lagos. She read Adebayo Akinyele of Atlanta — On hospice — and Mama Tate paused her, gently, and said *cross him out, baby. He went last week. You did not know. Tobi called me Wednesday. I did not tell you yet because I have been thinking about him. Cross him out. Write June twenty-fourth, 2026. Write went well. Tiana crossed him out with the felt pen and added the date and the words.
She kept reading. She read the long new column the family had been adding, three names to a page, in the careful block letters she had been writing for two months. She read Lillian Wells of Greenwood, Mississippi. She read James Wells of Memphis. She read Tamika Wells of California — Held by the next. She read the rest of Mother Wells's forty-three names, which Mama Tate had finished copying into the composition book over the last three weeks, one or two a day, in the small slow work she had been doing in the morning while Yvonne made breakfast.
When she finished, Tiana closed the composition book.
She set it back on Mama Tate's lap.
The porch was quiet.
The June light had gone the deep blue of late evening.
Carl was on the wooden chair with his hands folded over his knee. He had not, in the twenty-three minutes of reading, moved.
Mama Tate sat with the three books in her lap. The prayer book on the bottom. The composition book in the middle. The small green book on top.
She closed her eyes.
She did not, this evening, pray aloud. She prayed in the small interior way. Yvonne and Tiana and Carl did not interrupt. The porch held them. The pecan tree shifted in a small wind. Down the block a small dog barked once and was quiet.
She prayed for a long time.
When she finished she did not, immediately, open her eyes.
After a while she said, very quietly:
"Lord. The work is in good hands. The next ones know how to do it. I am tired. I want to sleep tonight in my own bed without worrying about the morning. The morning will come. The morning will be theirs. I will help when I can. I will not help when I cannot. The book is no longer mine alone. The book is ours. You have arranged this. You have arranged it well. I thank You. The keeping continues. I lay down the carrying I cannot carry. I keep what You have given me to keep. I trust You with the rest."
She opened her eyes.
She looked at her daughter, at her granddaughter, at her son-in-law.
"Babies."
"Yes, Mama," they said, almost together.
"Take me to bed."
She slept.
She slept the long deep sleep she had not slept in many weeks. The house held her.
In the spare room with the moon pajamas, Naomi Hightower slept too — turned on her side, with Mr. Apatosaurus under one arm and the small bear under the other, the night-light on the dresser throwing the small soft amber light Sheryl Hightower had been throwing in Naomi's room in Whitehaven for months. Naomi, in her sleep, did not move. She did not, in the small new house, wake.
In the spare room across the hall, Yvonne lay on top of the covers in her clothes. She had texted Sheryl Hightower at nine forty-five with a photograph — taken through the cracked door of Naomi's room, of the small sleeping shape under the blue blanket — and Sheryl had texted back, Mother Tate said it would be like this. Mother Tate is always right. Goodnight Yvonne. Thank you.
In the front room, Carl lay on the small loveseat with one foot off the end and his cap on the side table and his eyes closed but not entirely asleep, because Carl Brooks had decided he was on Naomi-watch and Carl Brooks would, until he heard the morning birds, keep one part of his mind awake.
Tiana, on the couch, slept the way she had been sleeping at her grandmother's house all spring, which was light and sweet and ready.
Outside, the June night was warm. The pecan tree shifted in the small wind. Down the block, in the houses on Park Avenue, the lights were going out one by one. In the small brick house on the corner, the keepers of the house were resting.
In Mama Tate's bedroom, the prayer book and the new composition book and the green book sat together on the nightstand, three books in a small careful stack, with the small black King James from 1939 on top of them.
The cloud of witnesses around the house had grown, in the small spring movement of the last two months, by every name written and every name read aloud. Calvin Pruitt was there. Patrice Williamson was there. Naomi was kept. Ruth was kept. Mama Funmi was kept. Mother Wells was kept on both sides. Daphne Crenshaw was held by the Lord. Tamika Wells, in California, was on every morning of every coming day.
Mama Tate, in her bed, did not yet know all of what the next year would bring. She did not know the names that had not yet surfaced. She did not know which Saturday her hand would write its last name. She did not know which dawn would be her last vigil. She knew enough.
She knew that the Lord was the Lord.
She knew that the book was no longer hers alone.
She knew that the small breathing in the next room was the breathing of a four-year-old great-granddaughter she had not, eight weeks ago, known existed, and who was, tonight, the small new face at the front of a fifty-year practice the Lord had been doing through her hands.
She knew that the keepers of the next generation were already in the house — Yvonne in the spare room, Tiana on the couch, Carl on the loveseat, Marcus three hundred miles south in his apartment in the Old Fourth Ward writing in his own small composition book before bed, Tobi Akinyele in her father's empty room in Atlanta sitting up with her sister Folake who had flown in from Lagos and stayed, Pamela Wells-Brown in Atlanta teaching her own daughters the Twenty-third Psalm at bedtime, Stephanie Edwards in Houston writing her first list at the kitchen table, Sister Doris Akers across town in her own room finally answering after twenty years of being called.
The cloud was bigger than the house.
The cloud had always been bigger than the house.
Mama Tate, in her own bed, in the small dark room that had been her bedroom for sixty-four years, slept the sleep of an eighty-two-year-old keeper who had — for the first time since 1974 — laid the carrying down for the night, because the carrying had been gathered into other hands, and the hands were good hands, and the Lord, who had been the Lord, would be the Lord through the night.
Outside, the pecan tree shifted.
The first volume of a long quiet work — fifty years already lived, an unknown number still to come — closed on a small brick house in Orange Mound on a warm Saturday night in late June, with three keepers under its roof and a four-year-old asleep in the spare room and a ninety-one-year-old keeper newly in the cloud and a great-grandmother in her own bed dreaming, perhaps, of her husband's hand on her arm in 1978 in a meeting room at Mt. Calvary, or of her own mother's voice in a kitchen in Mississippi in 1949, or of the small clear face of a sleeping seven-year-old in Houston she had laid her hand on a month ago, or of all of it together — because the Lord, who had arranged the keeping, did not separate what He had been doing in His own keeper's bones.
The work continued.
The work would, with hands the keeper had not yet seen, continue past her.
The Lord, who had been the Lord since before any keeper had been born, was the Lord.
And in the small first hour of Sunday, June twenty-eighth, 2026, the keepers of the house rested, and the cloud around them watched, and the morning — when the morning came — would belong to Naomi, who would wake first, who would walk in her moon pajamas to the kitchen, who would find Mama Tate already up and at the prayer book, who would climb into the chair beside her, who would say Mother Tate, can I help, and to whom Mama Tate would say, slowly, in the small full voice of a keeper passing the work to the next pair of hands she did not yet know would hold it:
Yes, baby. Sit here. I will read you the names. You hold my finger on the page.
And the great-granddaughter would.
And the morning would come.
And the keeping would continue.
